What does it take to increase the lifespan of people with cystic fibrosis (CF) from elementary school age to 40 years and beyond? It takes the inexhaustible commitment of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). And they aren’t done—they’re on a mission to cure the disease.
Achieving that mission requires an empowered and efficient team, resources for the CFF community, and ongoing measurement of how well their digital presence is serving their audiences.

Vision, Focus, and a Plan
The Foundation came to Phase2 with a new brand, explicit organizational goals, and ideas about how their digital presence could support and further their mission.
Together, we established two strategic goals:
- Provide key audiences with a quick path to find the content and resources they need
- Improve the Foundation’s operational efficiency around content creation
Strategy in Action
Phase2 developed a digital strategy focusing on serving key audiences and improving the Foundation’s content creation capabilities.
Our strategy was backed by a new design and design system. We created a new UX and information architecture, developed a content strategy that supported migration to a new, flexible platform, and implemented a meaningful digital measurement model to help CFF assess the impact and value of its new site.
The new website truly is bringing tears to my eyes. This layout would have been a game-changer when my child was newly diagnosed. I am thrilled for new CF parents, patients, and supporters.
A Platform to Power a Mission
Addressing the pain points for internal staff were paramount to this initiative’s success.
- What used to take weeks now takes hours. The web team can easily and independently update cff.org without assistance from IT.
- The team tracks progress toward their goals and adjusts in real time with user engagement dashboards across multiple metrics.
- The ever-evolving site stays on brand without all looking the same, powered by flexible layout capabilities.
- The integration of Acquia personalization and Acquia hosting means a secure, efficient, and relevant experience for CFF audiences.
This platform provides clear paths (for a variety of audiences) to the content they need—critical information for the newly diagnosed, a community voice for people living with CF, ways to get involved for those who support individuals living with CF, and Spanish language speakers now have expanded, more accessible content.
A smooth handoff helped the Foundation team plan their content migration and train everyone on the new platform, messaging framework, and content strategy. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s critical work continues apace.
The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care.
